A few years later

I'm not entirely sure what there is to say here. It's half two in the morning and I'm drunk. Whoo-fuckin'-pee.

I guess I'm still kind of amazed that the LJ model of fandom is still active. I've just joined indeedsir -- the Dreamwidth version, I mean -- and I haven't really had a look, but I joined based on a recommendation, which suggests people... are active?

It's a weird feeling to see fandom as how you remember it from 10 years ago. You know, you kind of expect it to move on -- FF.net to AO3; Livejournal to Tumblr -- and when you rediscover a space that reminds you of your teens, I suppose it's confusing. And by "you", I mean me.

Ultimately, I suppose that's it. Everything has changed, to the point where finding a community similar to the ones I frequented 10 years ago is the exception rather than the rule. And it's nice! it is! but God, it really does feel like a relic. Which is ridiculous. As I just said, it was (only) 10 years ago, and yet. And yet.

man this is bumming me out lmao, talk later uwuwuwuwu

comments

Love a bit of Tumblr messing up

I know Tumblr shits the bed every couple of weeks at this point, but I've been moving to other media just in case. I'm not going to delete my blog --- I have far too many followers (and thus far too large of an ego) for that --- but this does feel slightly more serious than before. Perhaps it's just that people are fed up of, well, Tumblr shitting the bed every couple of weeks. Can't say I blame them.

The problem is, where else is there to go? Take Dreamwidth -- yes, we made the transition from Livejournal to Tumblr, but I suspect long-form journaling has had its day. Pillowfort, even if it isn't a scam, charges $5 to register; Mastodon is too frantic for my tastes; nobody's heard of Ello. All of these sites have different userbases from that of the blue hell, too: though sites like Pillowfort have a similar structure to that of Tumblr, I doubt its content will be as inclusive. A focus on fandom lends itself more to, well, fanworks than it does to reblogging pretty pictures. Similarly with Ello, which is a lovely place for reblogging pretty pictures but likely indifferent-at-best to fandom culture. Ultimately, for all its faults, Tumblr fulfills a niche nowhere else currently does. Otherwise, I imagine far more people would have abandoned it far earlier.

I suppose it's the hipster/fandom divide of 2012 all over again, but what happens to the many, many people whose blogs are a combination of the two? I don't want to run two blogs on two platforms; frankly, I'm too lazy. Furthermore, with all the options available, I doubt all of the people I enjoy following will move to the same new platform, if any at all. It's honestly a shame Yahoo is running Tumblr into the ground, because I do think it's something relatively special, if only for its popularity: as far as I can tell, there just isn't a good alternative for it.

Of course, all this assumes that this is The End. I don't know about you, but I suspect Tumblr hasn't run its course yet, if for no other reason than because moving on is something that some people -- self included -- cannot be arsed to do.

comments

Alright, no, but for real.

There are rumblings of indeedsir moving to Dreamwidth, and since I have no interest in contributing to the LJ community with my shitty old blog, I've made a shiny new one here in the hopes that they finally leave the Russians behind.

It's weird, going back to an LJ clone after two or three years of Tumblr. Immediately, without even thinking about it, I'm back to typing in proper English, which is something I haven't done in... a while, haha. I'm not sure whether I'll use this much at all, since it's rare that I'm focused enough to vomit out something that merits multiple paragraphs and a cut and so on. But here we are, in any case. Ta-ta!

comments
